Shank barbs help to secure your bait in position particularly whilst casting but also to protect against normal wear and tear underwater which can often shake a bait loose. They are a very useful addition which gives this hook a specific baitholder identity, however, it is also a very good all round hook in it's own right for use in a range of situations from light shore to medium boat fishing.
